Skillparks

Skillparks

We develop, plan and build skillparks! In a skillpark, mountain bike enthusiasts young and old as well as e-bikers can train new skills in order to increase their riding safety. Everyone can have fun there, because the skillpark features a variety of elements with different difficulty levels. It is built from natural materials sourced from the region and therefore blends optimally into the terrain and surroundings. Through physical activity, this sport not only nurtures physical health but, through riding together with friends or family, also promotes social aspects.

What makes a skillpark special are the specially designed obstacles and elements created to improve riders' skills and techniques. Unlike normal trails and paths, which generally make use of natural obstacles and terrain features, the obstacles in a skillpark are artificially built and arranged to challenge the specific skills and techniques of mountain bikers.

Good to know

Benefits of a skillpark

Skillparks foster an incredibly broad range of skills in athletes of every age.

Improving skills and techniques

Skillparks are specifically designed to improve and train the skills and techniques of mountain bikers. By mastering various obstacles and technical features, riders can strengthen their confidence and abilities on the bike and thus be better prepared for riding on the trails.

Avoiding boredom

Skillparks offer variety and challenges that normal trails and paths often lack. For mountain bikers who enjoy improving their skills and abilities, skillparks can offer an exciting alternative to riding the same routes.

Community building

Skillparks can be an important meeting point for the mountain bike community, where like-minded people can come together and exchange experiences and tips. They offer the opportunity to meet new people and become part of a larger community.

Safety

By being specifically designed to give mountain bikers the opportunity to improve their skills, skillparks can also help to reduce accidents on the trails. By learning the right techniques and handling the various obstacles in the skillpark, riders can ride more safely and with greater control on the trails.

Promoting the sport of mountain biking

Skillparks can help to promote and support the sport of mountain biking by offering an accessible and controlled environment in which people of all ages and abilities can try out mountain biking.

Approach

Planning and implementation

The planning and implementation of skillparks depends on various factors, such as the location, the requirements of the target group and the legal regulations. The following points are taken into account when implementing a skillpark:

1

Site selection

The selection of a suitable site that offers enough space and natural features (such as hills and rocks) to build a skillpark.

2

Concept development

The development of a concept that encompasses the various courses, obstacles and features of the skillpark, as well as the safety standards and rules for using the park.

3

Planning and construction

The planning and construction of the skillpark, including the paths, obstacles, ramps, jumps and other features. Negotiations with the local authorities may also be necessary in order to obtain the required permits.

4

Opening and operation

The opening of the skillpark and its operation, the establishment of rules and safety standards as well as the maintenance and upkeep of the park.

5

Marketing and promotion

The marketing and promotion of the skillpark in order to increase the use and awareness of the park, and the staging of events and competitions in order to enhance the appeal of the skillpark and attract more visitors.

6

Testing and fine-tuning

After the skillpark is completed, tests should be carried out to ensure that the course is safe and rideable. If necessary, fine-tuning should be performed.

How much maintenance does a skillpark require?

With a skillpark, maintenance works somewhat differently than with a pumptrack. The reason for this is that a skillpark requires an intervention in nature and therefore needs more care than an asphalt pumptrack. The green area around the skillpark must be regularly cared for and maintained in order to ensure safe and pleasant riding.

History of skillparks

Mountain bike skillparks developed in the 1990s out of the growing popularity of the sport of mountain biking. Originally privately operated, they became more professional over time, and public bodies began to build them. Today there are many such parks worldwide, offering mountain bikers the opportunity to improve their skills and have a good time on the bike.
